I'm a D300 user.
First, check your settings. Are you shooting on "S" and locked onto a single focal point, or on "C" and tracking your subject?
Second, check how still you're holding the camera.
Third, focus sensors see contrast and may lock onto a nearby object, causing you to think you have a focus problem. Review some of the articles published on this.
Fourth, tests show that too small an f-stop may cause diffraction issues. Find your camera / lens sweet spot.
Finally, try the auto focus fine-tune menu. Check your camera using a tripod and a suitable target. After correcting the above items, I found a -3 setting improved images from my 18 - 200mm VR lens.
