Inkscape is a nice software for those who are just starting out to do vectors. It gives you a feel of the basic tools of the trade like the mighty pen tool. The best thing about Inkscape is that it costs next to nothing. Once you've got the learning curve under your belt, you should aim for Adobe Illustrator as it is the industry standard. Hope this helps.
