Hi!
It never happened something like this before to me.
It's been 10 days with NO DOWNLOADS!!!!
I'm not a contributor that is very important in the DT comunity, ... I don't have tousands of images, I'm not uploading many photos, my acceptance ratio is around
the site average AR, many rejections with comment: Thank you we don't need such a photo (sigh!)...
I can say I'm doing my best....April was my best month here,and this month started great . I had my best day on DT with 5 dl, I got dl fast every day, or casually a day or two without downloads...but now it's been 10 days , that hasn't happen even in my first days here.
My acceptance ratio was even bigger this month...and I feel as I was punished with the new search for trying to be good :((((
Am I wrong? maybe is just my lousy portfolio :((
Has anybody else noticed such a slowdown?

with me its the same. I had only 6 downloads this month. That is the worst month ever. My average in the last months is about 20 dls, so something is happening maybe... |

Hello, Ejla! Our database has grown extremely fast during this month, and looking at the overall size of it, it is normal that contributors with small portfolios will experience a drop in sales. With the rapid growth of the database, the joining of new contributors the demand for uploading continually and improving quality is higher and higher. Concerning your portfolio - many of your images are with themes that are well covered. This doesn't mean you shouldn't upload any images with these themes, but it does mean that your images need to be with an ever increasing quality and creativity in order to be well competitive with the rest of the database, especially as it keeps growing.
Milanlj, your portfolio is, in size, only 2.2% of the largest portfolio on the site at this moment. And you have only 4 new images this month. It is normal that sales will come slower than before.
This is not to discourage either of you, nor anyone else. This is to explain to you some of the main reasons why you are having less sales. It is not the search engine - it has been improved to produce better and more precise results. Plus, if it was the search engine, everyone would have experienced the same by now.
Take some time to read the articles of our photography blog, browse the largest portfolios and learn from them (not copy, but learn). Then begin uploading regularly and be patient. If you want a critique on your portfolios - post a new thread in the Positive Criticism forum and other members will give you their opinions.
Upload more and better and try to not be discouraged by the current sales. Change will come. |

Thanks, Peter for your answer... Are you saying that the database on DT suddenly growth in the last 10 days? I'm not expecting more than 1-2 dl every 1-2 days , as it was before this stop!
And when speaking about creativity and different photos...every one that I thought to be such, were rejected, and guess what, my best acceptance ratio was in February when I've uploaded a bunch of stupid canvas backgrounds photos

same happened to me, my sales this month (even its not end of the month i think in next 4 days there will be no rapid change) dropped to 1/3 of last month - my todays statistics are:

Hi Ejlar, similar slowdown for me, not as bad but slowing down.
And I can see the pattern: similar size of portfolio and downloads.
I think its conclusive what petarneychev is saying. Times for people like us with small portfolios are getting tougher.
But heck, we cant make a living with photo sales anyway and for me the fun aspect of taking pictures is most important.
So dont get discouraged and have fun! |

I too have the same sort of graph, the previous two months to this were picking up again after a big dip and i thought nice one, and i have managed to get 25+ images approved this month :(
oh well, more piccies required :-)
though it is disheartening to see this happening to Sugarfree.sk who has 700+ uploads. |

very nice portfolio Ejla, DT is me first and only stock images site, for me things are quite normal, i manage to have 2 DL daily (thanks to those who have DL them) as Peter mention bigger portfolio stand better chance, i'm working on it, no doubt is very demanding cos i have my daily work to attend. for those that have upload 1000 picture in short period i give my leg up for them too. Their superb as for we (stand a side!) crawling is on the way ha ha ...I like your street shadow Ejla |

I'm sorry but I disagree with this statement. The site has been growing extremely fast ever since it was started. The size of the database has nothing to do with the issue here. I've been with DT since October 2005 and that statement has been made over, and over, and over again. It's funny how on one hand, there is an emphasis on "quality over quantity" and on the other hand, the growth of the database against a persons portfolio with quality images is used to explain a decrease in sales. Aside from minor fluctuations and setbacks, I don't think it has anything to do with the search engine either.
If you take a look at Alexa ratings over the past three years, you'll see that traffic is down, and has continued to decline since a peak last December. My statistics reflect this exact same trend (of course I haven't uploaded any large amounts since then). Interestingly enough, the same decline in traffic is evident amongst competitors as well (which is good news - it doesn't relate to JUST DT - can't be related to anyone doing anything differently here or the search engine or the increase or decline of the amount of images for sale).
The simple explanation is there is currently less of a demand and less traffic hitting stock web sites. The solution is (and I agree with this wholeheartedly) to continue to upload images (which I need to do as well) and have patience.
Patience being the biggest of the two. |

Alexa algorithm changed when you noticed that peak. Our traffic continues to grow just as it did before. It seems their stats are somehow distorted maybe due to a change of algorithm. That affects all sites, not only us.
On one hand the agency tells you that you need to upload quality over quantity. On the other hand it says you need quantity too. That's correct. If you upload many poor files you will see no results. If you upload great files, you will see sales, more of them if you upload many great files.
The number of buyers continue to grow. Changes in search algorithm, changes in seasonal searches, your portfolio type and style etc. are factors that affect your sales. If you continue to improve your portfolio quality, its diversity, keep the database exposure growing and keep submitting constantly then you will see the sales continuing to climb. |

My portfolio is quite poor at the moment, but i did feel the last month a bit of loneliness, as nobody visits my pictures and no one download them. Thats even less than my first months in dreamstime.
If you check any topic on the searchs you will find many pictures with some views but 0 downloads .. |

Yes. It was predictable. DT pushed so hard for the 1M pics and now there are already at 1.2M. Customer base probably didn't follow that fast. It's pure math. The last months DT tumbled from my best to 3-d best seller. Hopefully it will smooth out when customers base catches up. To be clear, my sales on DT went down too. |

I dont agree at all. Either you guys are DT are too happy with the new search engine. I feel that the search engine is infact failing in giving desired results. My portfolio has been giving me a good income everyday and suddenly the sales have dropped like hell. Everyone here is complaining about the drop in sales but you guys are giving reasons that are unacceptable. This is not just going to affect our sales but the overall site performance in the end.
Take this for example. I search "Car" in my portfolio and the search results return pictures that dont have the word "car" in their title,descriptions or keywords. it returns photos which have words like e.g. "Carrying" in it. Great search system indeed. I feel the options with the new search is good with these failures, and personally feel that the drop in sales is only after the search system. |

The search system works very good. It is not a perfect system but it provides the best results compared to the previous algorithms we used. In fact it is the most fair of them all: is not favoring any new or old users and is much more difficult to spam.
It is true that some users may see a decline or an increase of their sales specifically related to the algorithm update. That is obvious. There is not a single change that can be made within it without affecting a part of the users. But this algorithm gives now a fair chance to all users. Posting sarcastic comments is not a constructive at all. You should improve the submissions' quality if the other requirements are already met: e.g. you have a large and diverse portfolio. Visit the portfolio of several of the top contributors and order the results by upload date ascending. Compare the quality they provided in the beginning (especially for older members) with the quality they provide nowadays. Ask yourself if your portfolio has the same increase in quality.
CAR search within portfolio
I've searched for "car" in your portfolio and found the results to be quite relevant. In fact there is one image that is not relevant and that is due to inaccurate keywords and NOT to the search engine.

It was a sarcastic comment, right but it came due to my main concentration on DT in all agencies.
Maybe you are right. You are professional photographers and businessmen in this industry. You know what quality my portfolio must be, because honestly I cannot judge myself as a photographer being an amateur.
All I can say is that I love DT and will be faithful as its the first agency I joined. The fact is that one of the largest agency in RM industry, called me when they saw my portfolio on DT to sell it to them, and I was surprised that they were accepting my pics of 3.2 MP when I know their acceptance starts at 12 MP. I thought I was doing really good
Someday if you come to India I will show you their CONTRACT PAPERS they sent me asking for my portfolio in DT which will prove what I said above. I was under a wrong impression that my portfolio is in a good shape in terms of quality due to this offer from the biggest RM agency because they GETT only good photographers for themselves. Maybe its not the case.
For posts like this I will avoid because if I say I like to tell what I see, I dont want to spoil my relations in here.. I saw about the image you posted about the circus with wrong keywords but what about 15 images which dont have 'car' as keyword, description or title still show in search results? They exist as well right?
Sorry Achilles, next time I wont talk anything about the DT system. As a contributor I will only contribute and go home with my daily income, or maybe only help others with their problems. |
