Dear Fellow DT Members,

I have joined DT in Feb 2011 but really started uploading in June 2011....So far managed to upload 155 images (with lots and lots of rejections...acceptance is ~ 26%) and total sale of 49 images......still not reached the magic "100$" figure yet....and now i am starting to wonder if all this hard work has been worth it....Not sure yet...i mean for sure i have learnt a lot in terms of what is acceptable in stock and etc... and still learning but i do get disappointed when i see my SALE figures... I have tried to incorporate various areas of stock...though could not enter food and business....but still i manage to have some what diverse portfolio. Have a look and please tell me your opinion positive, negative all are most welcome :)....

One thing i do not understand is the 'subscription sale'. One hand you are happy that you sold an image but on the other hand for such a small portion of money that it makes you wonder!!!!!!..........Out of 49 images i sold 27 were the 'subscription sale'.........Couple of my images are at the edge of being 'level 2' since long time but they are also not getting there.

I really request from my fellow community member to please give me your valuable feedback so that i can further improve my portfolio as well as my sales...

Thank you very much for reading it.

I look forward to hear from you :)

Best,

Som

You have yet to master the "Concept of Concepts." For example... you have a lot of baby pictures but they are, for the most part, generic snapshots.

Shoot the baby during feeding time, changing diapers, playtime, Mom taking baby for walk, etc. Because... stock is not cute baby pictures, it's CONCEPTS. Capture those moments that COMMUNICATE parenting to an audience of PARENTS.

I'm guessing you're using wife and baby as models. Wife cooking, washing dishes, etc. CONCEPTS. You've done the generic head shots, that's fine, but there are plenty of pretty young women head shots in the database. Look in the database for WASHING DISHES. Then study the ones that sell well and the ones with no sales. Can you see the difference why? When you do, get some dirty dishes, grab the wife and camera...

Hi Wisonsinart,

Thank you so much for such a valuable information. That insight is sure gonna help me in future....you are 100% right about too many generic baby pictures....i guess with your own baby as a model you tend to loose focus a little bit and get biased too .....though i do have few pic where baby and mom are bonding...will try to work on your suggestions in future shoots ...btw from ur profile name i m guessing you are from Wisconsin, USA. I lived myself in Milwaukee for 6 years before moving back to India. Thanks again for your time.

Best,

I second Wisconsinart really and I started the same with many snapshots rather than stock photographs. I still produce some snap shots but hope I'm creating more conceptual works. look what sells, don't just look at say baby pictures and think any baby picture will sell as there are so many on here, how are yours going to stand out. Some of your black and whites look like you have just converted to b&w by hitting a button as they seem a little flat, very mid tones. Where as making shots more punchy, higher contrast, use more of the tonnal range. I personally like to see black and white in black and white shots, not variations of grey. Hope this makes sense and keep on going, your doing a great job :-)

Hi there, I wont say much about your people images, the experts already told you what to do, about your extensive trips, first, I enjoyed them very much, specially the cows in Switzerland, the light was amazing in some of them, very nice.

One thing you should consider is correcting the vertical lines when you take the image pointing the camera upwards like on these one:

A beautiful Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin

I bet some of your rejections were because of that, the reviewer probably will say its a composition problem and its definitely quite easy to do some small fixes.

The other sugestion is to get the name of the monuments for posting them here instead of naming it  Praque Beautiful Church   Prague: beautiful St. Nicholas Church

Its easier if you geotag them with a GPS, than you can look for them in google maps later on, or you can make notes during your trip.

Yep... THAT Wisconsin. Very familiar with Milwaukee. I hope the time you spent here was good. Probably a very exotic experience for you the same as it would be for me if I spent time in your part of the world. :-)

By the way, I started writing a blog article about the subject of concepts, don't think I'm referring to you if you see it. Most was written before you posted so it's been in the works for a while now.

I am so happy to get the feedback from experts of this field...Thank you very much Brett and you are absolutely right about the b&w images...i will try to find some sense how to produce better b&w. I have been thinking to learn some photo processing software like photoshop or something...so far have not gone beyond "auto levels" fix ups.......

Afagundes thanks for your feedback and also for liking my images...in fact that vertical line thing is the problem i was just having when i looked at some of my new images from a Delhi's monument....it might be naive question for you but how do you fix this? i feel terrible for not being able to post my own images and you posted mine :)

i will try again as i just saw that i can edit my posts.

I am not an expert but I would add that you can also try to shoot isolated object (on white background).

I find this kind of photo is sell efficient.

Is not about colours,it's about concepts and strong images with message.I like the couple photo because it send a message about unity, love and respect. The photo with that bird is just a snapshoot. It has no message.Sorry if i offended you.Have a nice day
